March 10 2010
There are currently 5 billion mobile phone subscribers world wide. This number will continue to grow to 5.7 billion in 2014. According to eMarketer, at the same time, the number of mobile internet users will grow by about 1 billion, from 657.2 million in 2010 to 1.7 billion in 2014. These forecasts indicate that the mobile market is full of potential. Social media understand this chance for growth and therefore invest heavily in the new ‘first screen’: mobile.
The study conducted by eMarketer reveals that there will be 223.4 million mobile social network users world wide in 2010. This number is projected to triple its size to 760.1 million in 2014, accounting for 45 per cent of all mobile web users.
Facebook reported 65 million people using its platform on their mobile devices in September 2009. Only in January 2010, 25.1 million mobile users accessed Facebook via their mobile browser. Twitter was visited by over 75 million mobile browser users up to date (4.7 million mobile visitors in January 2010).
Social media are very conscious about the importance of the mobile channel. In the coming years we may anticipate a major trend shifting online social media users to mobile.
